A Guide To Leather Finishes

A Guide To Leather Finishes

When choosing a pair of high-quality boots, the leather finish plays a crucial role in both aesthetics and durability. Our boots are crafted from chrome-tanned leather, known for its softness, flexibility, and resistance to water and wear. Within this category, we offer four distinct finishes—each with its own unique characteristics.

1. Smooth-Out Finish

Best for: A clean, polished look with durability.

Smooth-out leather is the outer grain side of the hide, finished to provide a sleek and refined surface. It has a slight sheen and is resistant to scuffs, making it easy to maintain. This finish is ideal for those who want a more classic, structured look that can be dressed up or down.

Durable and easy to maintain
Naturally water-resistant
Develops character with wear

2. Rough-Out Finish

Best for: A rugged, casual style with minimal maintenance.

Rough-out leather is the reverse of the smooth-out finish, with the soft, fibrous side facing outward. Unlike suede, it retains the toughness of full-grain leather, making it highly durable and resistant to wear. It’s an excellent option for boots that need to withstand heavy use while still looking great.

Tough and abrasion-resistant
Doesn’t require conditioning
Naturally hides scuffs and scratches

3. Suede

Best for: A soft, textured look with a refined edge.

Suede is made from the underside of the hide, giving it a velvety texture. It’s softer than rough-out but still strong due to the chrome tanning process. While suede offers a stylish, premium look, it requires more care to maintain its texture and prevent staining.

Soft and flexible
Lightweight and breathable
Ideal for a more fashion-forward aesthetic

4. Nubuck

Best for: A velvety texture with added durability.

Nubuck is similar to suede but made from the outer grain side, meaning it’s slightly tougher and more resistant to wear. It’s sanded to create a soft, matte texture, offering a refined but durable option for those who like a bit of character in their boots.

More durable than suede
Ages beautifully over time
Has a soft, premium texture
